Panda Kids Kung Fu teaches flexibility, strength and movement through animal themes in conjunction with teaching Tien Shan Pai. Kids learn best when it's natural, immersive and engaging.

Our Classes

Panda Kids Kung Fu focuses on using animal themes to address key child development milestones. Our animal ranks align with themes children confront as they grow. Monkeys learn how to start practicing self control. Tigers learn how to manage the power that comes from their stronger growing bodies. Snakes learn strategy, recognize negative situations and work to diffuse them. They learn accuracy and control. Cranes learn to balance inner and outer awareness , to benefit from focus and craft.

Mantises seek mastery and final synthesis of all previous ranks as their maturity prepares them for adult level training. At the end of class, children wind down with a Mindful Moment. We practice breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques that help our students reorient themselves and turn down their emotional and physical thermostat in preparation for the end of class.

These techniques translate well to a noisy world and can be used for energy and emotional regulation whenever needed. Panda Kids Kung Fu wants to bring the fruits of over a thousand years of development to a new generation. The benefits of Kung Fu for today's children are many and go far beyond self defense.

Tigers have grown into bigger, stronger bodies and with that comes power. Tigers use power to navigate conflict and secure their place in the world and Tiger rank concentrates on how to use that power ethically and channel it in positive directions. Tiger rank builds strength but also learns control and emotional self regulation. In this rank we work on strength building in forms and techniques.
Monkeys are young and exuberant, reactive, social, and excitable. Monkey rank concentrates on putting this energy to positive use while learning self control and how to move from reactivity to responsiveness. We do this with activities that feel more like fun than instruction as we also build muscle memory and body awareness which are the building blocks of Kung Fu.
Snakes are creatures of strategy and precision. Fluidity, flexibility, calculation and appraisal are highlighted in this rank. Children of Snake rank frequently navigate more complex social circles at school and benefit from learning where to invest their energy and how to diffuse escalating situations. Snake rank works on building flexibility and accuracy into forms and techniques.
Cranes are creatures capable of great stillness and elegant movements. They are calm fisherman and graceful fliers. They utilize their environment and make their movements count. Crane children benefit from lessons on stillness, reflection and finding that calm center within them. Crane rank develops balance, use of the environment and inner awareness.
Mantises are formidable creatures who move with no thought into effective strikes and stances. Mantis rank concentrates on synthesis of all the lessons of previous ranks into a student ready to take on a more mature path in their Kung Fu studies. Mantis rank prepares students to enter Tien Shan Pai at the yellow sash level with a rock solid background in techniques, forms and sparring.

What Style will my child learn?

Panda Kung Fu is a unique introduction to Chinese Kung Fu that samples from many regional styles from Northern and Southern China to build a strong foundational repertoire of stances, movements, strikes and combinations. This foundation will prepare students for the physical and mental demands of TIen Shan Pai Northern Style Kung Fu and graduates of Panda Kids Kung Fu will move up with a yellow sash in this style.

Tien Shan Pai is a style of Kung Fu that stresses rhythm, the demonstration of power accentuated by solid thuds made by the hands, the emitting of power from the entire body, the coordination of the hands and feet as well as blocks and strikes, high kicks and low sweeps, as well as locking and throwing techniques. Tien Shan Pai focuses on low and steady steps to the side, along with swift "hidden" steps to trick one's opponent.

Sifu Brian Bowles
Sifu Brian Bowles is the founder and Sifu of Panda Kids Kung Fu. He earned his black sash from the White Birch School of Tien Shan Pai Northern Kung Fu where he is of the fifth generation. Brian came to Kung Fu after a very eclectic path learning from a variety of teachers over a period of twenty years. He specializes in Chinese styles and their practical fighting techniques. Aside from Panda Kids Kung Fu, Sifu Brian also teaches Integrated Fight Class at Kent Karate and Family Fitness and does Fighting consultation for other Martial Arts schools in the area.

Sifu Brian started Panda Kids Kung Fu because he saw that Kung Fu is generally a style that is harder for kids to access. It concentrates on very practical application, movements and techniques that can require a higher degree of flexibility and fluidity, and can be intimidating with its contact levels and use of takedowns. Sifu Brian also knew that Kung Fu has many gifts to offer in internal discipline and mental development that are wonderful for a variety of children, so he developed the Panda Kids Kung Fu curriculum to form a bridge into Tien Shan Pai Kung Fu. This bridge forms a very solid foundation in physical and mental skills that will prepare them well before they are asked to take on the challenge of more mature Kung Fu training.

Sifu Brian lives and works in Kent, Ohio. He is a husband and a father of two boys, both also martial artists. He loves Martial Arts and he loves his extended Martial Arts family at Kent Karate and Family Fitness.
